The Nutcracker Comes to Uxbridge

The original Nutcracker Ballet was based on the story "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Today each choreographer adds their own spin so it is different in detail from the original story, but generally the basic plot remains the same; The story of a young girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads.

In 1891, choreographer Marius Petipa commissioned Tchaikovsky to write the music for the Nutcracker Ballet and in 1892, the first showing of the Nutcracker took place at the Mariinsky Theatre, home of the Kirov Ballet.

The Nutcracker arrived in Western Europe in the 1930's and made its way to America by 1940. The first American full length Nutcracker was choreographed by W. Christensen and performed by the San Francisco Ballet.

The Nutcracker has since become an annual Christmas Holiday tradition for many. This is a story that involves both adult and children performers and is great for the young and not so young viewers.

As our economy slows down many local volunteer groups that provide support to our community are beginning to notice a reduction in the financial support they receive.

One such group is Sunrise

A group of dedicated volunteers who provide support to Young Mom's in our community. As their resources begin to dry up they are faced with the potential cutting of the educational and practical support they provide. You can help make a difference in the life of a child by supporting this small group today with a one time contributation or an on going one.

Sunrise is making a difference.

This year  we have offered both educational and such practical support to our clients as:

• A “Community Kitchen” where we make a cost effective, nutritious meal and have a speaker with a topic of interest.
• Transportation to medical, legal and educational appointments
• An annual retreat
  
• The “Clothes Closet” (where girls can help themselves to gently used donated baby’s clothing and items)
•  Networking with other agencies
  
• Mentoring relationships (S.O.S -Supporters of Sunrise)
• A program for the children
• We offer hope and guidance through every step of their pregnancy, birth, and parenting.

During this time of great economic upheaval; knowing the wonderful opportunities that await us in the coming year; and recognizing how critical year-end giving is to this ministry; I challenge you to support Sunrise now. Hydro One Customers

We received a little notice with our hydro bill showing the new rates and thresholds for those rates for the winter period running from Nov 1st, 08 to April 30th, 09.

Under the old rates a residential and/or most farm users would have paid $50.00 for the first 1,000 kwh or 5 cents a kwh under the new regulated price you will pay $56 for that same 1,000 kwh or 5.6 cents per kwh. and for all usage above the 1,000 kwh you will now pay 6.5 cents a kwh instead of 5.9 cents per kwh

That increase of $6.00 represents a 12% increase for the average consumer who consumes 1,000 kwh monthly

The notice states that the increase is only 2.3% if you consider the change in threshold as well but that threshold will change back in the spring and the rates won't so your real increrase is 12% compared to last year.

 

More increases in the total bill yet to come

The above increase is only affects your electricity usage and an increase has been applied for that will affect the delivery charges for that electricity.

Sandy purchased a 109 acre farm property located in the rolling countryside, near Ashburn Ontario. With the purchase of the farm Sandy was able to combine his interest in working on the land, with the desire to provide an opportunity to other persons with disabilities. His goal is to enrich the lives of others by being able to enjoy experiences in farming, nature, outdoor recreation and other activities  and to be able to share them with family and friends .

Officially opened in 1989 WindReach Farm now operates year round with the help of a charitable foundation formed in 1992  to ensure the continuation of Sandy' s work and in offering work training programs.

• Continue east along Townline Road (1.9 km) until you see # 312 on left side

Uxbridge Residents along with the rest of Durham Region are expected to put out less garbage, or at least recycle more, starting March 30 2009.

We received a flyer in the mail spelling out some of the changes that are supposed to bring Brock, Clarington, Scugog and Uxbridge in line with the other lakeshore municipalities in Durham Region that have already achieved greater waste reduction rates. Starting March 30th 2009 only four bags of garbage will be picked up on a biweekly basis, That is down from the 3 bags currently allowed weekly.

Bag Tags

For residents who wish to put out more than the allowed number of garbage bags they will be able to purchase bag tags for $1.50 to put on the additional bags. In Uxbridge the tags can be purchased at the Town Offices, the Library or the Zephyr Library.

Residents who have three children under three or medical conditions that increase their garbage amount "may" receive special consideration by phoning the Region at 905-579-5246.

"In a court of law we are presumed innocent until proven guilty and while it would be nice to think that the assessment department has to prove your assessment is correct (they will do that) in reality you have to prove it is incorrect if you expect to get a reduction. Simply saying it is to high will not get a reduction for you. It is up to you to prove that it should be what you think it should be." from Barrie's post

The onus is on you to determine that your assessment is correct to ensure that you only pay your fair share of taxes. Ensure that your property and lot size are not over stated and that any detrimental factors that affect the value were considered in the assessment process. Some factors that may affect the value might be flood land, EP land, or Hydro Corridors.
